While the Maganize of Art called the Royal Academy 'at its worst' in 1886, "Mr. Waterhouse, in The Magic Circle, is still at his best - original in conception and pictorial in his results. - The purchase [by the Chantrey Bequest for 650 pounds]...will cause general satisfaction."
